Homemade Tacos

Tacos are a typical and very popular dish in Mexico. They are very easy to prepare, as well as fun, since you can fill them with multiple ingredients and varieties.

The most popular Mexican tacos are those with chicken or meat, although you can incorporate the filling of your choice, with only vegetables and even sweet. In this recipe we propose a simple way to enjoy some homemade tacos, accompanied by a delicious Mexican sauce.

Flour tortillas have the peculiarity that they are made from wheat flour and that they do not require yeast in their use. These flour tortillas can be filled with sweet or salty.

You can also prepare them in advance and store them in the fridge.  That way you can fill them at another time easily and quickly, perhaps before a dinner or meal for which you do not have time to prepare it, or, simply, for a day that you do not feel like cooking too much.

Preparation of the tortillas and filling

Homemade tacos

  1. To make the tortillas, mix the flour, yeast and salt in a bowl. Cut a hole in the middle of the mixture.
  2. Then add the butter and warm water.  It is very important that the water is warm so that it mixes well with the butter and can melt it.
  3. Mix all ingredients. When you have a soft dough as a result, you have to take portions with your hands, form small balls.
  4. Spread a little flour on the work table to prevent the dough from sticking when you work it. With the help of a rolling pin, spread each of the balls until the flour tortillas are very thin.
  5. Pour oil over a frying pan and heat it. Incorporate the flour tortillas one by one until golden brown. If they take in air while they are frying, don’t worry, just turn them over and remove them on a plate with kitchen paper, so that they absorb the rest of the oil from the frying.

How to fill flour tortillas

With the same ingredients you can make some variants for the filling. We give you some ideas:

  • Salt and pepper the meat and fry it with a little garlic in a frying pan, with a few tablespoons of oil. Add to a taco and add the lettuce, onion, Mexican sauce, tomato, and cheddar cheese. Repeat on all tacos.
  • Do not previously fry the tacos. Incorporate the filling on the flour tortillas spread with the rolling pin, wrap them and add them on a baking tray with cooking paper. Bake the homemade tacos at 180º for about 10 minutes. A delight!
  • You can make the homemade tacos as in the first option, only you can add more cheddar cheese on each taco and gratin it for a few minutes in the oven.

You can add to each option some strips of red and green pepper baked for half an hour at about 200º

As you can see, the options for homemade tacos are multiple, varied and according to the taste of each one. You can make a variety of fillings with different preparations, to be to the liking of each of the diners.

If you have children at home, choose to make a dessert with sweet homemade tacos, filling them, for example, with banana and strawberries with chocolate, or with jam and fruits. You will be right for sure!

And you, what filling would you put or add to your homemade taco?
